What is whiplash, anyway?

Whiplash is a sprain or a strain of the soft tissues of the neck. It occurs when the neck experiences a sudden flexing motion, such as when your car comes to a stop in an auto accident or when you collide with another player on a sports field. Overstretching the muscles in the neck injures them, although the tears in neck tissue may be microscopic. When these tissues eventually swell, sometimes weeks or months after an injury, they pull directly against the vertebrae of your cervical spine to cause misalignment.

What are the signs I could be experiencing whiplash?

Nearly everyone who has whiplash experiences neck and head pain that just won't go away. As affected tissues swell and pull on the vertebrae of the spine in your neck, they may pinch nerves so that you have pain in your shoulders and arms. Swelling in your neck may pull on the muscles around your jaw and forehead to cause jaw pain and headache. Additional symptoms can include:

  • • Back spasms.
  • • Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • • Dizziness.
  • • Headaches.
  • • Jaw pain.
  • • Ringing in the ears.
  • • Sleep disturbances.

It's unusual for whiplash to cause all of these symptoms at the same time. Every whiplash patient's experience is just a little different, so it is best to seek chiropractic care to get an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

I was in a fender bender months ago. Could that be causing whiplash symptoms now?

Symptoms from over-stretching muscles in your neck may not appear for months after injury. Even injuries you walk away from can result in tiny tears in muscle that eventually cause big problems.

Don't I just need one of those neck collar things?

Cervical collars immobilize the neck to prevent further injury and to relieve pressure on pinched nerves. They may help with some symptoms, but they don't usually correct the underlying problem. Moreover, they interfere with circulation. Chiropractic care usually doesn't include the use of cervical collars.

What can chiropractic care do to relieve whiplash?

Our chiropractor can make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms. With chiropractic manipulation, massage, and other techniques, our chiropractor can help your body return to healthy alignment so symptoms stop.
