Winter Weather & Joint Pain

There are a few reasons why you may experience joint pain during the winter weather. Washington may not be the coldest state, but you can't completely escape the winter weather. The team at Health First Chiropractic Marysville wants you to have a pain-free winter. You need to know why this time of the year causes joint pain.

Winter Weather Causes Joint Pain

One reason why winter weather causes joint pain is that the atmospheric pressure changes. Some of the parts of our bodies like the joints, tendons, bones, and muscles are made up of tissues. Each tissue has its level of density and they are not all the same. When your tissues contract and expand because of lower temperatures and the humidity in the air, the traumatized areas of your body become extremely sensitive. The cold weather can also change the fluid in your joints so that your joints are less lubricated than normal.

Another reason for the pain could be that many people are more stressed during the winter months than they are for the rest of the year. Regular stress and anxiety can cause your body to tense up, putting more pressure on your joints and causing pain. Also, if you have a chronic condition such as arthritis, it may be harder to deal with during the winter.

How to Avoid Winter Joint Pain

Since we tend to spend more time indoors during the winter and move around less as a result, the joints can flare-up. The best way to avoid this is to move around as much as possible. You can start small with things like marching while standing in one place while bending and straightening your elbows and knees. You can also try rolling your shoulders. These movements help keep your joints healthy.
